20px 20px 0;" />Jamaica's month-old government on Wednesday
launched the first phase of an emergency jobs program that was the
centerpiece of its winning election campaign.

The government formed
by the People's National Party said some 700 jobless people will be
hired to clear vegetation and trash in the short- and medium-term along a
northern coastal highway in the first phase of the Jamaica Emergency
Employment Program.

Governing party officials
have not announced how many other jobs will be created in following
phases of the initiative. But the party has said its job-creating plan
will be developed around agro-processing, manufacturing, communications,
small business development, and cultural and community development
projects.

Local human rights group Jamaicans
for Justice said it is concerned that the governing party will
disproportionately employ its partisans since members of parliament will
choose the islanders who work under the initiative.

Historically,
most poor Jamaicans have affiliated themselves with a party, relying on
political patronage for jobs, houses and land.

"This
approach of MPs deciding who gets work on the basis of party
affiliation has contributed to the wastage of tax payer's money over
many decades and divided us along tribal political lines. It is
completely unacceptable and must be stopped," the rights group said in a
statement.

Civic groups are also calling on
the debt-burdened government to explain how much money will be needed
for the jobs initiative, citing the opposition's disclosure that the
initial phase will be funded by a loan the previous government arranged
with the Inter-American Development Bank last year.

Opposition
officials contend the emergency employment plan will not meaningfully
decrease the official 12.8 percent unemployment rate.

During
her inaugural speech earlier this month, Prime Minister Portia Simpson
Miller said her administration will use "state resources" to stimulate
employment.

The 66-year-old Simpson Miller's
People's National Party won 42 seats in Jamaica's 63-seat Parliament in
the Dec. 29 national election.

Her People's
National Party said it would try to renegotiate roughly 25 percent of a
troubled $400 million road program financed by China in order to
transfer some of the money to the jobs program as a way to kickstart the
economy.

But Transport, Works and Housing
Minister Omar Davies said in Parliament that $188.5 million has already
been committed by the previous government. He said his ministry will
"ascertain where it would be possible to make alterations to the scope
or to stop them."

Last week, Simpson Miller
called on the private sector to hire at least one qualified, jobless
islander under another job-creating initative she dubbed Jamaica Employ.
She estimated some 40,000 people could resume working if businesses
comply.

---

SOURCE: DAVID McFADDEN
The nutrients we eat should impact on hair growth at a rate of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch every month.

Do not expect the structure of your hair to change from fine and thin to rope-thick regardless of what you eat. However, a well-balanced diet that includes a lot of fruits and
vegetables, iron and protein-rich foods that promote growth can make a
difference in your hair.
A healthy diet will build stronger cells throughout the body including
those for hair. It is best to get the nutrients for hair growth from
foods instead of the beauty supplements that claim to provide nutrition
for thickening or growing hair. Supplements may cause hair loss if the
supplementation is too much.

Here are some foods that you should eat in maintaining healthy hair.

Eggs
As a primary source of protein, eggs also contain biotin and vitamin B-12, vital to maintaining healthy hair.

Beans
As part of the legume family, three or more cups of beans each week can
provide adequate protein for hair growth. Beans also provide adequate
sources of iron, zinc, and biotin. Biotin deficiencies can result in
brittle hair.

Salmon
Salmon is a high-quality protein loaded with essential omega-3 fatty
acids, vitamin B-12 and iron. A deficiency in omega-3s can result in a
dry scalp, giving hair a dull look. One or two tablespoons of ground
flaxseed in your daily diet can provide some plant-based omega-3 fats.

Poultry
Poultry is a great source of high-quality protein for healthy hair.
Without adequate protein or with low-quality protein, hair is likely to
get brittle or lose hair quality. Poultry also provides iron for hair
health.
Mega Marketing Limited's Managing Director Damion Black told Thursday Food that children are the store's primary customers "as thousands of children pass through the transport centre on any given day". The confectioner, who also supplies retailers and wholesalers from its vast stock of products, has since opening its doors on September 7, 2011 "hosted, on average, some 600 customers each day," this according to Mega Marketing's Marketing Manager Pat Thompson-Smith.
To mark the official opening, over 20,000 Bon Bon Bum sour lollipops
were given away to commuters who traversed the busy transport centre
last Thursday. The new Bon Bon Bum sour lollipop was a hit with
customers too, as Thompson-Smith explained, "the sour flavours came
about as a result of customer feedback, for an alternative to the
usually sweet flavours". The new flavours include: sour orange, sour
cherry and sour apple.
I'm never quite sure how to answer those questions because when it comes to food, I tend to be unpredictable. I'm also becoming self-conscious when I go food shopping now, because sometimes people just come up to me and peep into my trolley. It's especially embarrassing when I have personal stuff in there and I am much too polite to say, "Please go away."

I had an awful episode last week that rendered me absolutely speechless. This man just came up beside me with nary a greeting and proceeded to rummage through my stuff to see if he could get the same products as me and his attitude was really obnoxious, demanding what I used each item for.
I found it quite rude at the time, but can laugh about it now.
Fortunately the guy unpacking the fruits and vegetables came to my
rescue with an excuse that he was showing me something, because he could
sense from my tense body language that something was amiss. Normally I
am quite happy to answer questions related to food; however, my private
time is special to me. Food shopping is personal, a time to relax, and I
don't go peeping into other people's trolleys unless someone is
genuinely showing me something.

Naturally, my pantry items will not reflect at times those of the
average person. Yes, I support locally grown produce where possible, but
my palate craves diversity. Secondly, I'm often asked to develop
recipes. However, I do appreciate the questions as I know that many
cooks want to be more adventurous and need guidance on what to stock.

Outside of the basics such as flour, cornmeal, rice and sugar, I like to
stock up on pasta and Asian noodles. Seasonings and spices are crucial
as these are the gateway to a myriad of flavours in international
cuisine. Condiments are also good to have, such as savoury sauces,
mustards, assorted vinegars and oils, good quality salt and pepper.
Stock cubes are important as are fresh herbs. I try to grow my own, but I
do augment with store-bought if mine are not ready. Dried herbs are a
great standby, though, especially when you want immediate flavour. Dried
and canned legumes, and canned fish like mackerel, sardines and tuna
are great for fast meals.

A pantry reflects your lifestyle. For example, a large family's larder
would be different from that of a couple's or a single person. Some
people have almost bare cupboards because they seldom cook, while others
are packed to capacity. The type of produce speaks in a negative or
positive way to one's eating habits, while labels can suggest
socio-economic status. Food choice is deeply personal: for some it's
practical reasons, others have an emotional attachment to certain brands
and frankly, I like it that way.
He's the one who offers you a paid-in-full ticket. No one wants to go to hell where there will be no joy and no pleasures whatsoever, and God doesn't want anyone to go there either. The Bible says in 2 Peter 3:9 that God is "not willing that any should perish".

But there is a problem with getting that free ticket. We have all done wrong--we have all sinned, haven't we? God's Word says in 1 John 1:8, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves". Sin pollutes--it makes us unclean, unfit for God's presence in that wonderful, perfect place called Heaven. Sin penalizes--it separates us from a sinless God. Romans 6:23 says, "for the wages of sin is death".

In short, our sinfulness blocks the delivery of the ticket that we need to get into Heaven!

Who paid for it?

Wait! There's good news! Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth to be born and to live His life without sin. 1 Peter 3:18 says, Jesus "once suffered for [our] sins, the just [One] for the unjust [all of us!], that He might bring us to God". When God "laid on Him the iniquity [sins] of us all", Jesus cried out, "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?". The answer is simple and profound: Jesus was separated from God because He took your place and mine on the cross, and by dying He paid in full the "wages" our sins had earned.

Then He rose from the dead, was seen by hundreds of people, and is alive today so you can know Him and receive the gift of eternal life--your ticket to Heaven. That's right! The Bible says this about all who believe in His name in John 1:12: "as many as received Him [Jesus], to them gave He power to become the sons of God".

That is fantastic! You can become a "new" person--born of God--to start a brand new life that pleases God. And, of course, all God's children have a ticket to Heaven!

Do you want it?

It is no accident you are hearing this message today. God has made sure you can receive it. The whole issue is, did Jesus pay for all your sins or didn't He? God said He did. Trust God that it is so. John 3:36 says, "He that believeth on the Son [of God] hath everlasting life".

Just as a man says, "Yes, I will take this woman to be my wife," God wants you to tell Him, "Yes, I will take Jesus to be my Savior. I believe that He is the only way to Heaven." The Bible says in 1 John 5:12, "He that hath the Son [Jesus] hath life".

If you believe that God's way to Heaven is the only way and that Jesus Christ died for you, was buried, and rose again, you can "claim your ticket" by telling God in words like these:

Dear God, I have sinned. I know I have offended You in many ways. I am so sorry. I believe that Jesus suffered and died for my sins, paid my debt in full, and rose again. Jesus, I believe in You and thank You for what You've done for me. Please save me from the penalty of my sins, and give me a new birth and the power to live for You. Thank You for this offer to spend eternity in Heaven with You!

Remember what John 3:36 says: "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life."

Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!

Remember, friend, Believe by faith. Share the faith. and Keep the faith!

Daniel Whyte III has spoken in meetings across the United States and in twenty-three foreign countries.

She is also in the Guinness Book of World Records for creating and leading the world's largest line dance, with over 50,000 participants at Bishop T.D. Jakes' Megafest conference in Atlanta, Georgia. On top of all of that, she is a wife and a mother. She is the wife of the hardest working man in radio, the "Flyjock", Tom Joyner, and together they have raised two great sons. Her purpose and passion in life is to educate, empower, and energize women, children and families about living a healthy lifestyle.

Growing up in the church, she came to a new level in her relationship with Jesus Christ when troubles in a relationship caused her to do some soul searching. She often encourages her audiences to honor God by taking care of their bodies. She says of her work, "For the past 20 years, I have traveled to over 30 countries helping people get healthier. My greatest challenge was here - my family, my church, my community, and our country. Most people have tried everything, but there was one missing ingredient: God. While it is easy to 'fall off the wagon', there is no such thing as falling off the wagon with God. There's only the chance to be caught by Him." Her name is Donna Richardson-Joyner.

This is the "Chief of Sinners," Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, and just as Donna Richardson-Joyner gave her life to Christ, may I encourage you to do the same. Here is how:

1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God's law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: "For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not." Romans 3:23 reads: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." In fact, I am the chief of sinners, so don't think that you're alone.

2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: "For the wages of sin is death..."

3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: "For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast." Donna Richardson Joyner is obviously a very hard working woman. Not only that, she is married to the hardest working man in radio. But she does not claim that she is working her way to Heaven. She has received salvation as a free gift from God through Jesus Christ, and so must you.

5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

If you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me the following simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

Believe by faith. Share the faith. and Keep the faith! God Bless You!

Daniel Whyte III has spoken in meetings across the United States and in twenty-three foreign countries. He is the author of sixteen books. They are versatile and can be used on a range of food products especially cheese and vegetables. From the preparation of a simple meal to an elaborate spread with delicate finishing touches.

Types of graters

Graters come in many different sizes and shapes. A grater with a coarse blade is ideal for grating apples for pie or chocolate for dessert. One with a fine blade grates parmesan for pasta or ginger for curry. A slicing blade lets you create even slices of cucumber for salad or potato for casseroles and, with the prickly-looking grinding blade, you can grind citrus peel for a tart or spices like nutmeg.

There are all-purpose graters with multiple blades and there are specialised ones for specific jobs.

Hard-cheese graters are conveniently sized and fit neatly into your hand. They are designed for use at the table and to let you grate hard cheese such as parmesan straight over your meal. These graters are usually less suitable for softer cheeses like cheddar, which could easily clog the blade.

All-purpose box graters are the most versatile, and the type you use for grating larger quantities of food if you do not have a food processor. Box graters are most popular today as they offer you different grating options on either of their four sides for under $300. Some come with an attached storage container to grate the food into while others have a base, or simply collect the grated food in the middle while you rest them on a cutting board.

Flat graters are ideal for grating smaller quantities of food while cooking - just a little parmesan into the risotto, for example, or a bit of garlic and ginger into the stir-fry. They are generally lightweight, easy to hold and to clean, and take up little room in a utensils drawer.

Rotary graters tend to be bothersome to assemble and to clean, but are convenient for grating nuts, spices or pieces of chocolate, because you do not have the risk of cutting your fingertips while grating.

Caution!

Grating food requires the same degree of caution as cutting meat, filleting fish or any other food-preparation work that involves a sharp implement. Graters can easily shave the top off your knuckles if you are careless or grate slippery food right down to the end. Some flat graters have a protective cover or grating guard. Exercise safety in the use of graters for persons with disabilities with hand weakness, vision or mental impairment.

SOURCE: Jamaica Gleaner

It seems that many people out there are living with this problem and were grateful for my article. Some asked how we could lobby pharmaceutical companies or even the Ministry of Health for drugs not yet available in Jamaica now that allergies are on the increase. Others pointed out that I should have mentioned our beloved national fruit, the ackee, as a common allergen in Jamaica. One lady expressed how she felt so alone, that people thought she was being weird or a hypochondriac as they didn't believe food was the root cause of her illness. She told me she showed the naysayers my piece and felt vindicated. I appreciate the feedback and hope more dialogue will ensue at other levels about food allergies and how to control them.

Another popular trend in my reader e-mails of late inevitably are New Year diet resolutions; many people are asking me about diets. As I have always stressed, I am not a nutritionist, so I speak only in general terms to give you basic but not medical advice, as I am not qualified to do so. However, I am flattered that I have built trust and goodwill with you over the years and am happy to offer tips where I can. Like you, I also learn something new each day. This is the beauty of life. Many of us want to shed the pounds we gained over the holidays. Fortunately, I barely ate a thing over the holidays, but need to lose weight nevertheless; the chubbiness did not go away, so I can understand about wanting to jump into a fitness regime.

I recently came across a documentary link on a friend's Facebook page called "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" about a man who was 100 pounds overweight and who made a conscious decision to do something drastic to shed the pounds. He went on a juice diet and travelled around the US trying to promote healthy eating, sharing his story and listening to others and trying to get them on board. I don't think I could manage a 60-day juice diet, but I do know many people who embark upon shorter juice fasts to detox. A close friend and I are about to embark on one. I am trying my best to be disciplined. I will let you know how it works out for me.

Nowadays many of us live fast-paced lives and sometimes we honestly don't have the time to prepare a proper meal. So having a green juice or a smoothie can fill a gap, so to speak, and be a replacement meal. Based on the ingredients you use, these gems of liquid nutrition can be quite tasty and delicious. Today I am sharing two smoothie recipes. You'll need a blender for one and a juice extractor for the other. Juicing can be loads of fun. Do not throw out the vegetable or fruit trash, instead save it and use it for compost on your plants as the trash is rich in nutrients. The following recipes make one or two servings. Enjoy!

SOURCE: Jamaica Observer
