Editorial: Caribbean News NowAs a publisher of daily news from around the Caribbean, it has been impossible for us to ignore the reality of the constant and increasing flow of stories reporting the widespread upsurge in criminal activity in the region.

I'm a lonely lobby for a new Caribbean Federation. I
believe 1961's withdrawal from the fledgling Federation (born while we
were 'British') was an egregious error. Hopefully, if accepted, my
proposal to use consumption taxes/subventions to fund a new Federation
would avoid repeating the old Federation's most contentious issue,
namely direct federal taxes.
"Words need love too." - Kamau Brathwaite
There are people who find that measuring a country by its Gross
Domestic Product or overall official economic output is grossly unfair.
They argue that if money can't buy you love, it definitely can't buy
you happiness. There are other people who disagree. American author,
Gertrude Stein, said, "Whoever said money can't buy happiness didn't
know where to shop." Alan Alda, the actor, supported her, "It isn't
necessary to be rich and famous to be happy. It's only necessary to be
rich." I have also heard, "Money can't buy you happiness, it can,
however, rent it."
Conscription has been my battle but not my only focus. The young black
man is dear to my heart and as one I will always do what I can to make
sure we do ourselves better. In the last three years I've met many
people who have all been a part of my development including people that
disagreed with me. Today as I bid a temporary farewell I share my
thoughts on my experience and Bermuda through my eyes as a black man.

Financing. This is the lifeblood of capitalism, of the free market system, but once contaminated, it brings death and disaster as we have seen during the last two years with a string of broken banks, finance houses and even governments.
We believe Ms Betty Ann Blaine, a tireless children's rights advocate,
really has the country's best interest at heart. Her contribution to
national life in the capacity of talk show host, among other exploits,
has been nothing short of admirable.
Twenty years ago, the "one love" coalition called the National Alliance
for Reconstruction (NAR) collapsed in spectacular fashion. The People's
Partnership coalition is a demographic and ideological descendant of
that phenomenon and, inevitably, comparisons will be made between the
two experiences.
Bermuda is already in debt. As I understand it, the public debt has grown from $119.5 million in 2004 to today's reported $1,101.4 million.
