The Peaceful Caribbean

mapcaribbean.gifEditorial: Caribbean News Now

As a publisher of daily news from around the Caribbean, it has been impossible for us to ignore the reality of the constant and increasing flow of stories reporting the widespread upsurge in criminal activity in the region.

An Honest Look at Jamaica

IN our already tiny country, social media is putting us under the microscope and will herald a new breed of leaders, whether already clean or newly reformed. It's a good thing that Contractor General Greg Christie did not need this kind of scrutiny to do his job well, and so he hastened the process of getting folks to straighten up and fly right.

Save Your Strength, Jamaica

AS I think of next week's 'morning after', I remember October 31, 1980 when one of our team members arrived at the office with bell in hand. The JLP supporter jubilantly rang it in the ear of another who had shaved her head that morning to show her grief at the PNP's loss.

Can Two Bad Apples Spoil the Federal Bunch?

GordonRobinsonpic3.jpgI'm a lonely lobby for a new Caribbean Federation. I believe 1961's withdrawal from the fledgling Federation (born while we were 'British') was an egregious error. Hopefully, if accepted, my proposal to use consumption taxes/subventions to fund a new Federation would avoid repeating the old Federation's most contentious issue, namely direct federal taxes.

The Nature Island Literary Festival and Book Fair held in Dominica from August 6 to 9 is over. I have read as I was invited to do. So have writers Cynthia Wilson and Philip Nanton who also came from Barbados. I am now sitting on a stone bench in People's Park situated between two of the city's hotels - the Fort Young and the Garraway.
trinidad-logo-tobago.jpgThere are people who find that measuring a country by its Gross Domestic Product or overall official economic output is grossly unfair. They argue that if money can't buy you love, it definitely can't buy you happiness. There are other people who disagree. American author, Gertrude Stein, said, "Whoever said money can't buy happiness didn't know where to shop." Alan Alda, the actor, supported her, "It isn't necessary to be rich and famous to be happy. It's only necessary to be rich." I have also heard, "Money can't buy you happiness, it can, however, rent it."
ybm-study.jpgConscription has been my battle but not my only focus. The young black man is dear to my heart and as one I will always do what I can to make sure we do ourselves better. In the last three years I've met many people who have all been a part of my development including people that disagreed with me. Today as I bid a temporary farewell I share my thoughts on my experience and Bermuda through my eyes as a black man.

Are Jamaicans For Justice?

povertypicoct21.jpg
The buzz words are 'justice' and 'human rights'. All over Jamaica there is the cry, "We want justice." Peter Tosh famously sang about "equal rights and justice". The human-rights lobby is the most vocal and trenchant of all lobbies in Jamaica, commanding a deference in the media and within the political class, far above its numerical strength.

The Wisdom of the Jamaican People

Our political parties have always trumpeted their absolute belief and trust in the wisdom of the Jamaican people. But when that belief was tested, it showed clearly that those were just empty words.

The Contamination of Election Campaign Financing

finance-campaign.jpgFinancing. This is the lifeblood of capitalism, of the free market system, but once contaminated, it brings death and disaster as we have seen during the last two years with a string of broken banks, finance houses and even governments.
betty-blaine.jpgWe believe Ms Betty Ann Blaine, a tireless children's rights advocate, really has the country's best interest at heart. Her contribution to national life in the capacity of talk show host, among other exploits, has been nothing short of admirable.
PLP-talking.jpg
The women in the PLP had it right when it comes to Dr. Ewart Brown.

Don't forget he kicked Neletha Butterfield to the curb out of his first Cabinet, only to take her back.

The one woman he didn't move was Paula Cox. And yes, she's taking a hit on national finances and many want to know why she did not speak up.
trinidad-flag.gifTwenty years ago, the "one love" coalition called the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) collapsed in spectacular fashion. The People's Partnership coalition is a demographic and ideological descendant of that phenomenon and, inevitably, comparisons will be made between the two experiences.
debt-crisis.jpgBermuda is already in debt. As I understand it, the public debt has grown from $119.5 million in 2004 to today's reported $1,101.4 million.
